fighter jets over New York

On April 1st I had the day off and was with Nami and the kids in Park Slope, doing some shopping. All of a sudden we noticed two fighter jets flying right over us. WTF. First marines are training in the parks, now fighter jets flyovers, dirty bomb exercises with checkpoints ...

I recently re-connected with an old friend of mine whom I haven't seen in years, Roy, formerly of XLR8R magazine. Back in the day I did a piece on the QB projects for XLR8R, that's how we met.
Roy now works with the OUTLIER clothing company, I stopped by the showroom today to see him, and got out with some great pieces. OUTLIER stuff is super good, the approach is amazing, the highest quality fabrics etc etc. Some fabrics are from some of the same mills ACRONYM uses, enough said. Pieces are played down, simple and no bullshit. My OG pants and merino pullover fit like a glove.

While their online sales are killing it, they recently set up their showroom in Brooklyn, so you can touch the products before you buy them.

Oh, I almost forgot - while chatting with the guys, I noticed this book on the table ... SPOMENIK, by Jan Kempenaers (SPOMENIK means MONUMENT in Serbian)

pure insanity, post WWII communist monuments in former Yugoslavia. Some of those I remember from school excursions when I was a kid. These monuments are mindblowing, and there are so many of them in former Yugoslavia, every town and city has one (at least), I'm glad someone did a book on them.

it's good to be back

so we are back in our old neighborhood, Greenpoint, Brooklyn - they got us an amazing huge apartment/loft in a quiet area by the river, and it feels good. fewer people around then at our old place, and that's good, it's very quiet ... the neighborhood changed a bit since the last time I was here, some stores closed, the new ones opened, but the energy stayed the same - people trying to make it, sometimes they succeed sometimes they don't, but even if they don't, no desperation, they try again.

on the day my son was born, when he started screaming, I realized that it's payback time - whatever shit I did as a kid is coming back to me.

Looking at the promotional video for the new FUJI X100 digital camera, I thought for a second 'shit, this might be the first ok digital camera' - but then I went to their page with sample images, and thought 'you gotta be fucking kidding me, these are the images that should persuade me to buy an $1,200 fixed lens digital camera ???'. unbelievable.

here is my friend Phil's reaction to the image gallery:
'Well the dodgy b&w conversions piqued my interest, and the flower still life shots helped it along, but it was the cats that finally did it. I'm ordering two - one for backup. Shocking... seriously. They could've asked pretty much any photographer in Japan, or the world, to take sample shots for that, and that's what they came up with.'

My good friends from THINK TANK PHOTO recently sent me the SHAPE SHIFTER backpack, so I gave it a test ride on this trip to New York. And it really kicks ass. I don't use backpacks often, cause I usually need my gear to be readily accessible but for short trips out of town, or as an addition to my ROLLING CASE, this is ideal.
